Life is happening now
2 minute read
Imagine a feather resting on a marble countertop.
Your purpose? To move it with only your breath. You try focusing on the past—what happened, what you wish had been different. But no matter how hard you try, your breath never reaches the feather.
You turn your attention to the future—your fears, your hopes, your plans. But again, the feather doesn’t move.
That feather only responds to the breath that exists in the present moment.
Not the breath of what was, not the breath of what could be.
Only the breath you offer now.
The Illusion of Control Through Time
Many of us spend more energy than we realize trying to move the feather of our lives with breath from another time. We obsess over the past or try to outmaneuver the future. But life—real, meaningful, soul-aligned life—can only be influenced in the now.
And that requires presence.
That requires self-leadership.
That requires choice.
Freud, Adler, and the Decision That Can Change it all.
In the world of psychology, most people are familiar with Freud and his emphasis on childhood experiences and subconscious motivations. His approach invited us to look back—deeply and repeatedly—into our formative years to understand our behaviors today.
Adler, however, saw something different. He focused on strengths, goals, and the choices we make in the present to shape our future. He understood that our beliefs about ourselves, our direction, and our capacity to grow were just as vital to healing and living well.
How many times have you stood at a crossroads in your journey?
Maybe you considered a path that you once longed for, but now doesn't seem to resonate like it once did. Something didn’t feel right.
How many hours would you spend rehashing the past, when sitting with that is happening now is unfolding before your eyers begging for your attention?
What if you chose an action of movement, resilience, and embodiment? How might being in the present allow you to gaze into the past and future without the charge?
Looking Back Without Getting Stuck
Make no mistake—there are times when understanding the past is essential. We’ve all had to look back. We’ve stumbled. We’ve gotten stuck. And yes, we’ve borrowed from Freud’s toolbox to learn and make peace with the “why” behind some of our old patterns.
But we don’t live there, even though we can practice humility and admit we have at times.
We can relearn how to glance over our shoulders just long enough to gather the lessons and context we need to inform our present decisions. And then—we return to the now, to the moment where the feather actually moves.
Be, Do, Have - Clarity in Action.
It is through action we learn and grow. To appreciate where we are. To hold both the vision and the value of this moment.
But the greatest teacher of all?
The one moment right in front of you in the adventure story of your life.
